Like most California cities, Sacramento is broke.  How broke?  They have been negotiating to spend tens of millions of tax dollars to keep a billionaires play toy in town.

At the same time, they are planning on firing public safety officers.

“We have to keep making adjustments in order to live within our means.  And this budget reflects more of the same, and, in fact, I would expect this for another year after the coming fiscal year.”

Shirey estimates the City’s budget deficit will be $18 million for the next fiscal year.  Besides the police and fire layoffs, 188 other city employees would be laid off.

The police department is actually threatened with three times as many layoffs of officers and support staff, but the city expects federal grants will be continued and will save about half of those jobs.”

In other words, Mayor Kevin Johnson, a former play for the Sacramento Kings, prefers an arena for the Maloofs, owners of the Kings, then cops to protect the public.

Conflict of interest or just dumb?  At least we still have the Second Amendment—remember when seconds count the police are only minutes away.

Sacramento police and fire departments will shrink July 1st if the city’s proposed budget is passed.

Sacramento City Manager John Shirey says the city will layoff 62 firefighters and 35 police officers if the City Council approves the budget.

SHIREY: “We have to keep making adjustments in order to live within our means.  And this budget reflects more of the same, and, in fact, I would expect this for another year after the coming fiscal year.”
