Stockton’s Slide Toward Insolvency Brings Soaring Crime Rate; 29 Homicides So Far This Year

California City News,  6/21/12

It’s generally not a good sign when a thriving business in your city is funeral services. Sadly, that is the case in the struggling city of Stockton and as the local government has slid toward bankruptcy, crime has increased in light of a diminished police force. Just this year alone there have already been 29 murders. One man, who saw his father murdered before him by gunshot and who has personally robbed at gunpoint five times, stated the following: “At this point, I’m used to it. It’s a fact of life.”

The past four years has seen the police force shrink by 26%, and in the process murders and robberies have shot up in the financially troubled city. Bloomberg reports on the impact on funeral services:

“Services have increased to at least one a day this year from about four a week in 2004, said Pablo Cano, who has owned the Stockton mortuary for almost 15 years. ‘We’re seeing a lot more crime, definitely,’ Cano, 70, said in an interview. ‘The shortage in the police is leaving everything wide open to where people feel they can get away with anything.’ Cano has seven employees and said he’s looking to hire more to keep up with the funerals.”

Mayor Ann Johnston has also singled out the effects of realignment in increasing crime, as she commented, “Every day, people who should be spending time in the county jail are released back into the community, waiting for a trial date or something. That adds to the criminal element on the street at any one time.”
