Secretary of State Debra Bowen announced this afternoon that her office has approved, for signature gathering, an initiative repealing Prop. 8 and making gay marriages legal in California.
This is in addition to an earlier proposal that would replace all marriages gay and straight with domestic partnerships.
The sponsor of this new initiative, Charles Lowe of the Davis-based group Yes! on Equality, has to collect 694,354 valid signatures by Aug. 17 in order to qualify the measure for the ballot.
