Yes, it does take money and grassroots precinct operations to win an election. But, a candidate without ideas or a foundation will lose since voters want to know where you stand and what you are going to do as an elected official. A nice smile in a brochure only goes so far.110411-vote-sm

In Sacramento our contingent of GOP legislators do not seem to be focused, very little direction and can anyone name a bill or area of interest of a united Caucus since January? Senator Anderson has been a real leader, providing legislation, amendments and direction. Glad Anderson is on our side!

How Republicans Can Move Ahead in California

Op Ed by Senator Joel Anderson, Exclusive to the California Political News and Views, 10/18/13

A dangerous psychological phenomenon is working its way through the State Capitol that is similar to the Stockholm Syndrome, lawmakers identifying and sympathizing more with their captors - the Democrat Majority, rather than their liberators - the citizens of California.

As lawmakers we represent the people who elected us to serve them and do right by them. When I took the oath of office I knew that my voice and vote was one representing over a million people in San Diego and Riverside Counties.

As Republicans and as the Minority Party in this state we need to engage more with our neighbors and constituents in our districts to build on Republican values. The future of the California Republican Party is contingent on our plans for leading, and it’s the Republican Party that is the party of ideas and solutions.
Political theorist and philosopher Edmund Burke said it best by stating, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”

The time to act is now, and as we look ahead to next year’s crucial elections, I offer some common-sense recommendations for our party to grow and prosper.
For new candidates or seasoned lawmakers, these simple suggestions could make a difference for our party in November 2014.

A candidate must be entrenched and active in the community. The person running for office needs to know his neighbors, participate with community groups and local organizations. They need to understand and reflect what the majority of people need to prosper and grow in their community. If you are out of sync with your community and district – no one will vote for you.

As for articulating positions, this takes a lot of deep thought and careful preparation. Be ready to explain in detail about why Californians need more prosperity and opportunity. Let the Majority Party advocate and defend more government, regulations, and most of all, taxes.

At every opportunity, we Republicans must demonstrate that we are the party of ideas, and expose the Democrats as the party of “No.” We must not just sit on the sidelines and do nothing, but offer thoughtful amendments to improve legislation and think out of the box – putting Californians first!

Let’s believe in this country and let’s believe in this state. California Republicans are making strides, even if it’s just one step or one seat at a time. We should be the party of independent doers for our constituents. Let’s put citizens first, and always remember that it’s for our constituents we must achieve success.

Senator Anderson represents the 36th Senate District which includes parts of San Diego and Riverside Counties.
