The Left believes that if we put a special tax on soda, health costs would go down. With that theory, if we put a special tax on hot dogs, hamburgers, donuts, pizza and fried chicken our health costs would go down. Why not?
If we put a special tax on tax raisers and job killers we would save on the cost of mental health services and drugs to make us mellow. Why not? How about a special tax on all foods? Did you know that if we outlawed cars there would be NO drunk driving? Why do we take these folks seriously—raise taxes on soda, ask, “What is the punch line of your joke?”
“As shown by outgoing New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s efforts to ban Big Gulps, soda taxes are controversial. California lawmakers shelved past efforts by State Sen. Bill Monning, D-Carmel, to implement one, but the issue is expected to resurface shortly after the Legislature reconvenes Jan. 6.
“We see a lot of the data that shows the adverse consequences of sugar-sweetened beverages, but what’s notable is (the study) goes straight to the correlation between a sugar-sweetened beverage tax, and consumption and better health outcomes,” Monning said.
Imagine, we could have “Speak Easies” come back—Pepsi Cola sold instead of whiskey!
