On the campus of Beverly Hills High School there is an oil well. Throughout the city you will find oil wells—hundreds of residents get royalties for oil beneath their property in this famous city. Not the image of a world class city, huh? Yet, oil is an important source of revenue for the city and the school district. You would thin, within reason, they would want more. But, this is a silly city.

While no one has even suggested that fracking be used in the city, the city council—always looking at the local political winds, came out against fracking—next week the council votes on ending slavery—tough votes.

“The move was largely precautionary, since no company has yet put forward any proposal to conduct fracking in the city.

City Spokesman Therese Kosterman said there was “just the sense that industrial processes such as mining and oil drilling really is not appropriate in Beverly Hills.”

Someone needs to tells the spokesperson that oil drilling has been going on for decades in the city—must be a high school intern—no professional would make this rookie mistake.

Beverly Hills Becomes First City to Ban Fracking, Condemns Nation of Brunei

California City News, 5/8/14

The Beverly Hills City Council gave final, unanimous approval to a ban on hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”) on Tuesday, becoming the first municipality in California to have officially prohibited the controversial energy extraction method.

The move was largely precautionary, since no company has yet put forward any proposal to conduct fracking in the city.

City Spokesman Therese Kosterman said there was “just the sense that industrial processes such as mining and oil drilling really is not appropriate in Beverly Hills.”

While no other California city has banned the process yet, Los Angeles is currently exploring a possible moratorium.

Beverly Hills’ ban on fracking takes effect on January 6 of this year.

In addition to the vote on fracking, the Beverly Hills City Council approved a resolution Tuesday condemning the nation of Brunei. The move follows a series of protests and boycotts of the Beverly Hills Hotel which is owned by Brunei’s Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah. The uproar stems from the implementation of recent criminal codes in the country which make homosexuality and adultery punishable by death.
