Exploiting a legislative loophole, Assembly Democrats late Sunday passed a tax increase and other fixes to bridge the states $24.3 billion deficit without a single Republican vote.
Typically, tax increases and budget votes require a two-thirds majority. Since just over one third of the Assembly is controlled by Republicans, that means Democrats need at least a handful of GOP votes.
But under the plan approved late Sunday, the Democrats were able to approve the tax increases and budget fixes, which come close to solving the entire deficit, on a simple majority vote.
The State Senate is scheduled to vote on the same plan starting at 9:30 a.m. today.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzeneggers office, however, has said the governor will veto any majority-vote plan.

The democrats in the California Legislature are incompetent idiots. I wish I could run my business the way they do the state. The answer to Californias budget problems are simple. Each state employee, teacher, firefighter,police officer etc. will be given a 25% pay cut starting TODAY. In addition, all retirements will be given a cut. In addition, they will pay for 50% of their medical insurance. If they do not like it then they can QUIT. Welfare to illegals and education to illegals is now eliminated. orry, Mexicio is a nice place so please go home. Remember, this is a staate that passed the biggest tax increase in history earlier this year. I, for one, am sick of shouldering the expenses for a bunch of mooches.

we have the representation in California that we elected. They are simply a reflection of our own dysfunction. Special interests of one ilk or another are blind to any concerns but their own, thus reasonable consensus becomes impossible to orchestrate. We are now collectively so strung out on government heroin ($$$) that we cannot face the pain of withdrawel. They take our hard earned money and then dole it out to gain more power and control over us. We are willing victims in this bad movie. My solution: If they are in, vote them out irrespective of party. Start over fresh with a mandate for reasonable spending and reasonable taxation. The private secotr will flourish in return and revenues will grow as a result. Raising taxes now is absolutely stupid. Nuff said.
